Chinese companies did not localize their way into optical modules under sanctions pressure; they out-executed Western incumbents in an open global market over fifteen years, and today they supply the majority of the high-speed optics wired into American AI data centers. The optical components and systems value chain runs from optical chips (lasers such as DFB, EML, VCSEL and CW sources; detectors; modulators; TIA/driver electronics), through passive components (AWGs, PLC splitters, isolators, lenses, MPO connectors), to the transceiver modules that plug into switches and servers, and finally to subsystems such as ROADMs and coherent line cards. Demand splits into datacom (data center interconnect, now overwhelmingly AI-driven), telecom (metro, long-haul, access/FTTH, wireless fronthaul), and emerging categories including lidar, consumer 3D sensing, and optical computing.
